Buying A Used Car From Another Person?
I am buying a used car from this girl down the street. She has a loan on it but is paying it off when I give her a cashiers check tomorrow. She is going to type something up saying I have bought the car and give me the keys and says she will give me a call and bring me the title when it comes in. Is there anything else I should do to protect myself? Also where can I find what the tax and title fees will be if we are doing this in Jacksonville Florida?

If your state requires that the car be mechanically fit, have your mechanic go over it before you buy it so you don’t get any nasty surprises.
Make the check out to this girl AND her loan company so that they both have to sign it – that makes sure that she pays the loan company off and they remove the lien on the car – otherwise you’ll wind up paying her loan off.
Make sure yo have insurance on the car starting from the day you purchase it.

I would insist on going to the lender with her, and get the title right then. If you are depending on her to get you the title, you don’t know for sure if she will do it, she may take the money and go. You need the title, and the bill of sale, showing the amount paid for the car, the date, make/model/yr. If you live in an emission control area, it must pass the test. If it’s under ten yrs old, the odometer disclosure info must be completed. To find out your fees, go to Fa/DMV, it should get you to the website for Florida DMV, and you can find out other valuable info as well. Good luck.
